"Safe to Come Out!" Art Competition
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The LGBT Safety and Security Team, Belize, with support from Our Circle and funding from CoC Nederlands will be hosting an Online Art Competition to support the work the LGBT Safety and Security Team has been conducting since the beginning of this year.
Many LGBT youths are not in the spaces created by the LGBT organisations in Belize because of the sensitive nature of age and sexuality. Therefore, many of them are not able to discuss openly their sexuality, their experiences or their fears and stories of "Coming Out" as a member of the LGBT community.
With this “Safe to Come Out” Online Competition, the youth population, both LGBT and allies, will use original art to capture and portray through art their understanding behind "Coming Out" safely in Belize. This art competition will be held amongst youth groups and organisations in order to raise attention to allow the artistic representation of what safety for the LGBT community would look like in their homes, their community and workplaces.
Each participant must be willing to participate and complete an online two hour group discussion about what coming out means from a safety and security aspect on Saturday September 26th, 2020 at 3pm to 5pm. Registration to be a part of the competition must be completed no later than Friday September 25th, 2020 at 4pm.
Art pieces will be physically submitted to Our Circle and displayed on our Social Media Pages and Website for exactly 7 days (October 3rd - October 10th, 2020). The winner announced on Coming Out Day - Sunday 11th, October, 2020 from a tabulation of the "People's Choice" (40% social media votes) and a panel of judges (60% votes).
All art pieces will be housed in a fundraising auction for Our Circle's anniversary event, giving each artist a platform to sell their artwork, with a 5% donation going back to Our Circle.
