Strengthening LGBT Families Against Social Inequality
Since 2015, this project has been funded by CoC Netherlands, UNDP and local funding to provide assistance to LGBT families and families of LGBT persons in understanding and minimizing the effects of social inequalities. While homophobia and exclusivity riddles our legal, political and social systems, there are identifiable means and ways to addressing social inequalities, however, not much attention has been raised to these ways. Our Circle believes, by addressing and securing social stability for the LGBT families, it will enrich the lives of the LGBT persons and create a new image for the LGBT community. If more and more LGBT persons engage these systems along with the political engagement from the relevant organizations, social inequalities and processes can be properly documented, comprehensively compiled and systematically circulated. By doing this, Our Circle has been able to purposefully sensitize key persons in legal and political spaces in an effort to make the process inclusive and welcoming to LGBT persons and families of LGBT persons hence, minimizing the fear of being stigmatized, discriminated or ridiculed for enquiring and engaging these processes. There was also a video made of and by LGBT parents (by affinity or origin) highlighting the social injustices currently being faced, the way some have been addressed and the issues still pending that limits us. The documentary has been locally and internationally circulated in an attempt to raise awareness as well as increase pressure for leaders to address these issues. While this project does not directly affect poverty, indirectly, the issue of poverty is addressed. Majority of the LGBT community would not be able to afford consultation about the processes that can secure themselves and their families. Therefore, this project has incurred the cost of personal consultation fees, based on availability of the legal and political consultants implemented into this project.
